FRONT Launch

Contemporary dance is talking about itself. In writing. In a new publication called FRONT that launches today from 5:30-7:00 at Ford Food + Drink at the corner of SE 11th and Division. A project by Danielle Ross, Robert Tyree, Noelle Stiles, Tahni Holt, with contributions by, among many others, ORArtsWatch writers Barry Johnson and me. This project has been percolating all summer and is finally coming off the stove. I’m inspired by this effort by members of an arts community to generate more conversation around their work.

We are ignited by how contemporary dance performance is emerging through current discourse. We publicly engage, observe and shape these conversations. FRONT was initiated as a platform for contemporary dance performance, giving voice to many different opinions and playing with modes of distribution. Five of us initiated this project: Tahni Holt, Alyssa Reed-Stuewe, Danielle Ross, Noelle Stiles, and Robert Tyree. We are choreographers, dancers and contributors to contemporary dance performance, who are based out of Portland, OR. We are unencumbered by sponsorship or corporate strictures. We rely on the old-school tactics of the newspaper infused with new, current, future energy of dance theory and practices in the field. FRONT acts as a performance in which the form stays the same but the format is ever-shifting to directly meet the needs it instigates. It is an experiment.
