Sixty years ago, the Beatles (almost named the Silver Beetles) came to America and were swarmed by screaming teens as they toured the country. Seattle fans saw their Pacific Northwest performance and heard songs including “Please Please Me,” “I Saw Her Standing There,” and their mega-hit on the US charts, “I Want to Hold Your Hand”. Manager Brian Epstein shepherded the quartet along the exhausting journey; filmmakers Albert and David Maysles documented the band’s offstage and candid moments in “What’s Happening! The Beatles in the U.S.A. (1964).”
Portland Art Museum now invites you to take another look at offstage, candid, and personal moments as captured by Beatles singer-songwriter Paul McCartney. The photographic exhibit, “Paul McCartney Photographs 1963-64: Eyes of the Storm,” curated in large part by McCartney himself and organized by Julia Dolan, PAM’s Minor White Senior Curator of Photography. Visit PAM’s website for additional information on this exhibit chronicling “The Beatles’ meteoric rise from British sensation to international stardom.”
And enjoy this “Beatlemania” puzzle, focused primarily on the incredible lyrics, which might have you singing the incredible melodies that still make our feet tap and our hearts soar sixty years later.
