This crossword was projected for 2023 to celebrate the significant birthdays of Doris Kearns Goodwin and David Gaub McCullough. The two historians and writers were a decade apart in age but shared a common love and adoration for history and biography. Sadly, McCullough died this past August at age 89. But Goodwin, age 79, is going strong and, in fact, will be in Portland on October 18 as the kickoff lecture event of the Oregon Historical Society’s Mark O. Hatfield Lecture Series.
You might know Goodwin from biographies of U.S. Presidents. You might have seen her sharing her historical political perspectives as panelist or commentator or, with equal expertise and enthusiasm, talking about her beloved Brooklyn Dodgers.
McCullough’s sonorous and soothing voice became the vocal fingerprint for many documentaries, including Ken Burns’ Civil War. The subjects of his biographies are not posed waxed statues; they seem to breathe again. Iconic structures, such as the Brooklyn Bridge or Panama Canal, also appear living through the chronicles of those who built them. Perhaps most well know is his biography of John Adams, which in 2008 provided the framework for the HBO miniseries of the same name.
Thanks for sharing, David and Doris.
