You might be thinking that this crossword could be a bit of a challenge. How many famous conductors of (primarily) the past century can you really name? You might be surprised. Give it a go.

Despite its difficulty, many of the more challenging clues can be solved simply by referring to related clues within the puzzle. Some clues, for example, will only reveal a conductor’s first name (e.g., Leonard) or their last (e.g., Boulez). Or perhaps you’ll be tipped off by the name of the orchestra or choir with which a conductor is most closely associated. In other cases, just one word might spark a memory (e.g., Fantasia) and bring a nod and a smile.

You may not be surprised that most of the conductors you recognize are men. But you will be pleased to find some ground-breaking female conductors, such as Keri-Lynn Wilson, and some Black conductors, such as Joseph Bologne, who broke through social bias to guide their musicians to brilliance.

Enjoy.
