PuzzleWatch: Mother-Inspired Art

In honor of Mother's Day, here's a crossword puzzle that celebrates the theme of motherhood in the arts.
"Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1" (Whistler's Mother) by James McNeill Whistler
Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1 (Whistler’s Mother) by James McNeill Whistler

Mothers are favorite subjects in all artistic genres. James McNeill Whistler used grey and black to paint his mother in profile; Antonín Dvořák and Charles Ives both composed works based on songs their mothers taught them. The climax of Samuel Barber’s beautiful Knoxville: Summer of 1915 is an emotional memory of his mother. Memorable mother characters, such as Iolanthe and the Queen of the Night, are regulars on the musical stage. P. D. Eastman’s children’s book Are You My Mother? is an endearing story of a mother/child bond and Edna St. Vincent Millay reflects upon her life as she honors her mother’s in “The Courage That My Mother Had.”

But some of the most precious pictures and poems and songs about mothers are being drawn or written by children of all ages right now—the best mother-inspired art of all.  Happy Mother’s Day.
