“Everything in the universe has rhythm. Everything dances.” — Maya Angelou

News flash. Portland’s dance season doesn’t begin and end with The Nutcracker each December. Oregon Ballet Theatre has a full six-show series, and several other wonderful Portland-area dance ensembles mount their own productions, host guest dance troupes, and offer community classes for children and adults: White Bird, Northwest Dance Theatre, push/FOLD, BodyVox, and The Portland Ballet (which is busy preparing for its Thanksgiving performances of The Enchanted Toyshop)—just to name a few.

Dance is a melding of story and music and choreography. Jazz, ballet, tap, ballroom, tango, contemporary, and more—for every culture, every rhythm, every occasion, there is a dance. Ballet has inspired some of the most iconic scores in classical music by some of the genre’s most notable composers—Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, Debussy, Ludwig Minkus, and Adolphe Adam. You’re sure to find their names in this puzzle, along with those of famous dancers and choreographers—Balanchine, Robbins, Graham, Arthur Mitchell, Twyla Tharp, and Katherine Dunham. We can thank them for bringing us gems such as Swan Lake, Giselle, and West Side Story, and so many other works.

Enjoy the puzzle and the art of dance.
