Portland’s sure had some virtuosic violinists in its concert halls over the years. Isaac Stern was here in 1966, Joshua Bell just this past April. Genre-bending artists Black Violin will appear at the Keller Auditorium this March. And this week, the great Itzhak Perlman returns to perform with the Oregon Symphony on January 19th at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall.
In this crossword we highlight Mr. Perlman and other violinists, both past and present—like Anne-Sophie Mutter and crossover violinist Patrick Robert—as well as the composers who created the masterpieces they play. And we also honor those who have graced the first chair of the Oregon Symphony Orchestra over the past several decades. Hugh Ewart and Michael Foxman each served for 30-plus years as concertmaster, followed by Jun Iwasaki and our current artist Sarah Kwak. And of course, a few other music luminaries are thrown in just to string you along.
