Concert halls have been a trending topic in Portland this past year. Many meetings, studiesz and proposals have been undertaken to determine the next steps in creating a new space for Portland’s thriving, lively performing arts. What will it sound like, look like, where will it be, and what artistic delights will it bring to the city?
For centuries, these questions and more have been driving forces in concert hall design. Many of us have gaped in amazement, snuggled into seats, and been acoustically swathed in the concert halls of the world. These halls can be ornate, like the Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona. Some are architectural wonders, like Tokyo Opera City Concert Hall’s oaken pyramid. Some, like the Victorian Royal Albert Hall, are more than a hundred years old; others, like the enormous Kazakhstan Central Concert Hall, have stood for fewer than twenty.
Use the clues and pictures above to enjoy this journey to some of the world’s great concert spaces, where performers and audiences like us continue to enjoy the privilege of live music, dance, and theater. Bon voyage.
